A Drastic Change

I have been a housewife for over 5 years, choosing to not work outside of the home.  I have kept my small online business going (creating pioneer outfits for little girls) but for the most part my time has been my own.

A couple weeks ago my husband's boss offered me a job.  They anticipate getting much busier this year and expect to divide my hubby's job and I would get the extra work.  We discussed the idea of me working and decided to try it, so I accepted the job.  The really good part is they did not want me to start for a few weeks, when the extra work begins.

Well, I have enjoyed my last couple weeks but my free time is about to end.  I am to start working full time on March 5th.  I approach this date with excitement and trepidation.  Excitement for the opportunity to re-enter the workforce.  Trepidation because it has been so long since I had to be at a job for 8 hours a day, I expect I will be very tired for the first few days.  My other fear is that I will not be able to do the job.  My brain has not had to do this type of detailed work in a very long time and I sure hope it is up for the task.

So as I begin this new chapter in my life, I will do it in prayer for wisdom!

The Importance of Family

If you are a regular reader you know that my husband was unemployed for 8 months and has taken a job in North Dakota.  As a result of this we have a very, dear friend who is house-sitting for us in Mississippi while we are away and we have been living in hotels for 2 months because of a lack of available apartments.

Being away from our home is difficult and not being close enough to visit makes it even harder.  This would be a very morose situation if it were not for family.

This family is not our biological family and not even our home church family (whom we miss terribly) but the family of Christ as represented at Harvest Reformed Church in Minot, ND.

We first  contacted this church before we left MS, as a possibile place for us to worship while we were up here.  Our home pastor checked the church out for us, as well, and he said it looked promising.  Our first Sunday at Harvest proved to us the Lord had definitely led us to this church.

We were welcomed warmly and the members of this church have gone out of their way to make us feel at home and a genuine part of their fellowship.  We have been included in book studies, family meals and fun excursions-and we have only been here one month.

The Pastor and his wife are a true example of Christian hospitality and love.  They have invited us for dinner, opened their home for me to set up my sewing projects, and even offered to have us spend a few nights with them when hotel rooms cannot be found.

Others have invited us for brunch, to visit their gardens and just to get together for a good time.

How lonely I would be without the friendship the ladies of this church have extended.  They have truly gone above and beyond in making us feel welcome.

There is no way to express our sincere gratefulness to the Lord for the blessing He has shown us by leading us to this church.  If you live in the Minot area and are looking for a church, come by for a visit.  You will surely be blessed.

A Sign of the Time

TWO DIFFERENT DOCTORS' OFFICES

Boy, if this doesn't hit the nail on the head, I don't know what does!

Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint.

Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.

The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn't reviewed for another week
And finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?

The FIRST is a Golden Retriever.
The SECOND is a Senior Citizen.

A Southern Gal

Why southerns are considered friendly. . .

FRIENDS: Never ask for food.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Always bring the food.

FRIENDS: Will say "hello".
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Will give you a big hug and a kiss.

FRIENDS: Call your parents Mr. and Mrs.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Call your parents Mom and Dad

FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Cry with you.

FRIENDS: Will eat at your dinner table and leave.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Will spend hours there, talking, laughing, and just being together.

FRIENDS: Know a few things about you.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Could write a book with direct quotes from you.

FRIENDS: Will leave you behind if that's what the crowd is doing.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Will kick the whole crowds' back-ends that left you.

FRIENDS: Would knock on your door.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Walk right in and say, "I'm home!"

FRIENDS: Are for a while.
SOUTHERN FRIENDS: Are for life.

I am a southern friend.
An interesting post as we head north for a few months.  More on our adventure in a few days.

A Lesson on Friendship

As a result of Hurricane Katrina our little church has had to close.  We had to sell the building and pick up all the pieces.  It was a sad time but circumstances forced this upon us.  So it was time to move on and find a new place of worship.

We really hate looking for churches, seems like there are so many different religions, with so many different beliefs that it is hard to find a place you fit and feel at home.  It is difficult to believe that we have found churches to be some of the most unfriendly places around.

We once belonged to a large church in New Orleans and were part of the core group and we were surprised when people said they found our church unfriendly!!  We had lots of friends so we could not understand the problem.

So we started watching.  Visitors would come in at the last minute, sit towards the back and leave as soon as the service was over-there was no time for anyone to be friendly to them.  We began trying to reach them before they could leave just so we could welcome them, but in the course of this we also learned how to be a visitor at a church.  A lesson that would prove useful in the future.

Then we moved to Houston, TX which is a very transient community.  There are not many native Houstonians around so people in that area have learned to be friendly to newcomers.  Churches are large and friendly and we had no problem making friends and fitting in.

Then we moved to Mississippi and things changed.  Mississippi is quite different from anyplace else we have ever lived.

When we started looking for a church we remembered the lessons we learned in New Orleans-we arrived early, sat in the middle of the sanctuary and stayed around after the service was over.  Many, many people said hello and welcomed us-they never introduced themselves or asked our names.  They never asked where we lived or worked.  Basically they were not friendly.

It took us over 6 months to find the little church I mentioned earlier and it was heartbreaking when we had to close the doors and start all over looking for a new church.

Again we began visiting churches all over the area.  So many people were glad to see us, told us hello and that was it-no introductions, no one asked our names, we did not feel welcome.

Since then, we have found a church where we feel welcome and are slowly making friends.  I hope other church memebers will read this and understand how hard it is to find a church home and will reach out and make an effort not only to be friendly, but to actually befriend the visitors to your congregation.
May God be glorified.

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day-a day we honor mothers, originated in the United States in 1907 when Ann Jarvis started a crusade to honor women.  The idea quickly became popular and spread across the country.

Mother's Day is the most popular day to eat in a restaurant (this is why we never go out to eat on Mother's Day-we go a week later).   Mother's Day is also one of the most lucrative holidays celebrated in our country.

As I think about Mother's Day this year I am feeling nostalgic for my mom.  My mom was left a widow with 3 small children in 1960.  There weren't many opportunities open to a single woman in those days but she worked hard as a waitress to keep our family together.  My mom went to be with the Lord in 1989 and I still miss her today.  She would have loved my grandkids!!  but I guess they get spoiled enough by the rest of us.

Mother's Day brings to mind the qualities of a godly mom-she is loving and kind.  She cares for her family.  She is patient and soft-spoken, to deal with the little hearts in her care.  She loves her Lord and shares this love with her family.  Mom is all about love.

Today is Mother's Day and I hope you will let your mom know how much you love her and how much you appreciate all she has done for you.

High Tech Sewing

I have been debating the idea of purchasing a computerized embroidery sewing machine. These machines are so neat but, oh, so expensive. . .

A cartridge is inserted in the machine and you thread it and set it up and it does the embroidery. This would be a way to offer monograms and personalization for customers.

Also available is software that allows you to download images from the computer and embroider them on your fabric. What a great way to add embellishments to all of my creations. I can think of a million uses for this.

The downside is, of course, the price. The machines are over $1,000, the software is $600 and every cartridge must be bought separately.

An alternative I am considering is this Embroidery Machine by Brother.

This machine has been recommended by several people and it gets very good ratings from users.
My next issue is to find the space for a third sewing machine in my studio. I really need to do some organizing in there so I can make room for it. Then all I need to do is talk my dh into buying it for me!

Useful Information

"Stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand . . .
And "lollipop" is the longest word typed with your right hand. (Bet you tried this out mentally, didn't you?)

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, or purple.

"Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt".? (Are you doubting this?)

Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our noseand ears never stop growing.
The sentence: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter of the alphabet. (Now, you KNOW you're going to try this out for accuracy, right?)

The words 'racecar,' 'kayak' and 'level' are the same whether they are read left to right or right to left (palindromes). (Yep, I knew you were going to "do" this one.)

There are only four words in the English language which end in "dous": tremendous, horrendous, stupendous, and hazardous. (You're not doubting this, are you?)

There are two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: "abstemious" and "facetious." (Yes, admit it, you are going to say, a e i o u)

TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard. (All you typists are going to test this out)

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds.

A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second.

A shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors.

Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated.

The average person's left hand does 56% of the typing.

The cruise liner, QE 2, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns.

The microwave was invented after a researcher walked by a radar tube and a chocolate bar melted in his pocket. (Good thing he did that.)

Do Right!

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business.
Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different.   He called all the young executives in his company together.

He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO.   I have decided to choose one of you."   The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. "I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you.    I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO."

One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed.    He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story.  She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed.    Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown.    After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow.

Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew.   Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing.   By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure.

Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed.    Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing.    Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however, he just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow.

A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection.

Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot.    But she asked him to be honest about what happened.    Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right.    He took his empty pot to the board room.

When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives.    They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes.    Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him!

When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives.

Jim just tried to hide in the back.    "My, what great plants, trees and flowers you have grown," said the CEO.    "Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!"

All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot.    He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front.   Jim was terrified.    He thought, "The CEO knows I'm a failure!   Maybe he will have me fired!"

When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story.   The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim.    He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, "Behold your next Chief Executive Officer!   His name is Jim!"

Jim couldn't believe it.    Jim couldn't even grow his seed.

"How could he be the new CEO?" the others said.

Then the CEO said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed.    I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today.    But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow.

All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers.   When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you.   Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it.   Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!"

Doing right is not always easy but it is always best!

Great Books

I love to read and recently I read a book that I could not put down.  During the day I normally read non-fiction and I save the fiction for bedtime reading.

I haven't red a book that was a real page turner in quite awhile but this book kept me awake a couple of nights it was so good.

I finally finished it during the day because I just couldn't wait for bedtime.

Ms. Henderson is a very talented Christian writer.  I have enjoyed several of her books but this one was truly a treasure.

As I mentioned during the day I normally read non-fiction and my current favorite is a book by Jerry Bridges.

This book is not for the weak or weary heart, it is very convicting.  The author addresses the sins we so often overlook, such as; selfishness, jealousy, and gossip.

This is not the first time I have read this book but it is a book that needs to be read and re-read.  It reminds us, with each reading, of the seriousness of these sins.

From pleasure reading to spiritual uplifting, I hope you enjoy both of these books as much as I have.
