Settling In

We are finally in our apartment and have started making it a home.  We had ordered a bed, a real bed, our first bed in almost a year, and the box spring would not fit around a corner.  We had to special order a split box spring.  So for the first week we slept on the mattress on the floor.  Finally, last Friday, our box spring arrived and they set up the bed.  This weekend for the first time in almost a year, we slept in a bed that belongs to us.  Ahh, the comfort!  I feel really spoiled!!

Our friends, who are allowing us to live in their basement, have gone to pick up their furniture.  They are selling a home in Ohio and buying the one we will share.  They will be bringing back with them some creature comforts that we have not had in almost a year.  They will be furnishing us with a table and chairs, love seat, recliner and a few other goodies.  In the meantime, we have purchased some camp chairs and are using our well-worn travel bins as tables.  We are really looking forward to their return and the use of some real furniture.

Our trip to Granite Falls, MN was nice.  We visited the church I mentioned but did not have time to visit since we still had a 7 hour drive home.  I did get photos and hope to get them uploaded this week.

So for now it is back to work and wait for the rest of the furniture to arrive!

Sunday Phunnies

The Perks of being Over 50

Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.

Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.

Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.

People call at 9 PM and ask, "Did I wake you?"

People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

Things you buy now won't wear out.

You can eat dinner at 4 P.M.

You can live without sex but not without glasses.

You enjoy hearing about other peoples operations.

You get into heated arguments about pension plans.

You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.

You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.

You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room.

You sing along with elevator music.

Your eyes won't get much worse.

Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.

Exciting Happenings

We have been in Minot, ND for almost a month and have been staying in a local hotel.  This week we finally got to move into an apartment.

It is so nice to be able to settle in and actually have some space.  We can now, find our clothes that have been packed away in space bags since we left Superior, WI.  And the best part is we have a kitchen again.  Oh, I am sure glad about this!!  We are both tired of eating out all the time, however, this is not quite over yet.

We are heading out of town this weekend to Minnesota, and travel always entails eating out.

My birthday is this weekend and we thought a trip to MN would be fun.  Last year when we were here we explored west to Montana, Wyoming, The Black Hills and the grasslands of North Dakota but we have never explored to the east.

We drive through Minnesota when we leave Superior and head to Minot but we are always in a hurry and don't have time to explore.  So this weekend we are heading to Willmar, MN.

We are planning to visit First Baptist Church of Granite Falls.  This church is a family integrated baptist church, just like ours at home in south Mississippi.  We miss our church so very much and this one seems like a little taste of home.

So we are leaving Minot right after work tomorrow and heading east.  Hope to be back with photos next week.

First Visit

Last week we visited one of the jobsites where they are actually putting in pipelines and building storage tanks.  I finally got to use my steel toe boots and hard hat (Oh, as recommended, I did get some flower decals for my hard hat.)  We left our office and headed further west.

The site we visited is about 30 miles west of our office and not too far off the main highway.  We found it fairly easily and were surprised to see the construction trailer was so nice.  Now don't get me wrong, I don't mean fancy, but we had heard this site was very rough.  But on the contrary it is designed like the trailer we work in-a double wide with 2 offices on each end.  No kitchen facilities but everything was fairly neat.

As I mentioned previously the wind was really strong out there.  Even my husband had difficulty standing up in it.  I am glad we parked the way we did, I could fall into the car instead of having the door fly out of my hand.  The wind really is unrelenting.

After we left we decided to take a new road and head north to one of the sites that has not begun work yet this year.  We had forgotten how much nothingness there is in North Dakota.  Once we left town we drove for 20 miles and saw a few farms but mostly just farmland on the prairie.  Then we came to the junction where we turned and another 20 miles of nothing until we reached the city of Kenmare.  This is a really cute small town that we enjoy driving around.

Time was getting away from us and we headed home but that was an hour away.  So another long drive with gorgeous scenery-lots of hills and valleys but it was still a long drive.

We arrived home just in time to eat dinner and do laundry.  Another very full day on the prairie.

The Bathing Suit Pilgrimage

I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit.

When I was a child in the 1950's, the bathing costume for a woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a darn good job.

Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure chipped from marble. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney's Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands.

What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing suits was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that a shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash.

I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap into place I gasped in horror ... my bosom had disappeared. Eventually I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took awhile to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I re-aligned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full-view assessment.

The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom and sides. I looked like a lump of play-dough wearing undersize cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent salesgirl popped her head through the curtains, "Oh, THERE you are!" she said, admiring the suit. I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me.

I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversize napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with a ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane on a bad day. I tried a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink one with such a high-cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear it.

Finally I found a suit that fit ... a two-piece affair with shorts-style bottoms and a halter top. It was cheap, comfortable and bulge-friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said "Material may become transparent in water," but I'm determined to wear it anyway. I just have to learn to breaststroke in the sand.

Weather Alert

Just last week I posted about springtime coming to the prairie and over the weekend we were on alert for 2-4 inches of snow.  Thankfully, the snow did not appear and the weekend turned out to be pretty nice.

On the other hand we have been under a severe weather alert for high winds for over a week.  The wind in the city of Minot has been 20-35 miles per hour but on the prairie (where we work) we have had 40-50 mile an hour gusts.

The job site we are located at consists of 2 trailers with a deck connecting them.  Going from one trailer to another means going outside-holding onto the door because the wind will definitely take it away-and fighting the wind to open the door of the other trailer.  Guess where the ladies' rest room is located?  Yes, in the opposite trailer from ours, along with the coffee pot.

In another week we will start visiting the actual sites where the pipelines are going in.  These sites are located far from the cities in very remote areas with equally as strong winds.

I am so glad I decided to cut my hair before we came to North Dakota, at least I don't have to worry about my hairdo.  I have come to call the wind-blown look, my North Dakota style and I am enjoying it.
